I focused on feeling calm and using my performance intention skill. It put me in a place of feeling super positive and I was able to keep my heart rate under control which was amazing with the pressure and importance of the event
Dr. Lorenda Beuker has been working with my college Men’s Lacrosse team. She has met with our team a total of five times for an hour each time, and our team buys in to the skills and techniques she discusses with us. Dr. Beuker prepares our student-athletes to be more mindful and present while performing their best. During our monthly meetings, the team has done personal inventories; discussed training techniques to be in the moment; created performance intentions and anchor words; and, examined performance saboteurs. She does a great job relating to and examining the mindset of our athletes to help them understand triggers and anchors that hurt and help their performance. Dr. Beuker’s time and expertise has been an invaluable resource in helping our student-athletes perform to the best of their ability.
I used the breathing and the performance intention at the end of the season in State and National Championships. It made me feel more loose. I was feeling pressure wanting to score goals and to win states so it was perfect to have something to rely on when I wanted to win so bad. My mom (Dr. Beuker) pointed out the mindset skills strategies pro athletes use so I knew I wanted to use them too!
I have learned that I want to put trust in myself, and to do this, I rely on the performance intention to kick me into a moment-by-moment feeling and execution where I allow my best self to emerge regardless of the external environment.
I always judge myself and then feel like others are judging me. As soon as I felt those thoughts creep in I relied on the mindset skills strategy and it completely drowned out the thoughts.
After success in college, I was dying to prove what I could do at the professional level, This led me to work with Dr. Beuker on mindset skills. I needed to simplify my thinking which is a hard thing to ask someone who is overflowing with curiosity. Dr. Beuker introduced me to the performance intention mindset skill. This repeated phrase helped me so much and has evolved over my years of use to keep me from thinking so hard about what I need to do when I’m on the ice. I used the performance while attending NHL training camp and oh boy did it help. To this day I still use a version of it to help my performance on and off the ice.
I think it was really the focus and repetition of the performance intention word relax. I felt really good the first game but the second and third I didn’t feel great. I didn’t play amazing in those but even though I wasn’t tracking great I just tried to stay mindful and in the moment. The last two games I felt good though and I actually wasn’t as worried about controlling everything. I kind of just relaxed and then when game time came I just put my head in each moment and it felt good. So, I think the key is no matter how I judge how I feel I know I can still give my team a chance!
I did it!!!! I made it into the top 5 of the team!!! I’m very happy that the work we did during the off-season started to work. I would like to continue mindset skills training because a lot of positive things happened after using focused breathing in the qualification.
My daughter is a mindset-skills believer! At sailing practice last night, she applied what you taught and she finished second out of 13 boats beating much more experienced racers. She said she stopped overthinking what she needed to do and just went with the flow and got into a great rhythm with the performance intention.
Through mindset skills training, one can see that players were present in the moment of competition during a battle with their opponent. Furthermore, our sidelines were more engaged and involved in what was going on.
As an athlete, performance intentions helped me strengthen my mental game, keep motivated, and remain calm in both good and challenging moments. Performance intentions were influential not only in my athletics but also in my day-to-day life. As a leader (captain), the mindset performance techniques helped me keep my composure for my teammates because in keeping my confidence, I could help them and encourage them to do their best. Since I started using this performance intention method, my game, my mind, and body language changed for the better, and how I could stand up for myself and my teammates during games was very good. I now use this method for everything, especially when I have a moment where I see myself with some stress or problems. Since using performance intention skills, I have handled everything better.
During my lacrosse career, performing at the highest level was my top priority. When I got to college, competition increased, and I needed something to fall back on when things didn't go as planned. I was introduced to performance intention, mindset performance skills, and internal strategies. This mindset skills technique helped me stay present, calm, and composed in the toughest of situations. Another strategy I was introduced to was to focus on my breathing while standing tall with my shoulders back. What I learned was extremely helpful when things weren't going my way, and I had to stay focused on the next play.
